Plant piping and other pressure retaining components are often subject to degradation mechanisms such as stress corrosion cracking, microbiologically influenced corrosion, flow accelerated corrosion, fatigue or corrosion-fatigue. As a result, loss in structural integrity or leakage may occur.
SI has played a major role in the development, application, and regulatory and jurisdictional acceptance of weld overlay repairs as permanent or long-term fixes for such degradation. These include weld overlay repair designs for boiling water reactor (BWR) piping and nozzle safe-ends; pressurized water reactor (PWR) canopy seal welds and nozzle safe-ends; and repairs for balance-of-plant piping in all plant types. Additionally, SI has participated in the development of an in-vessel underwater weld overlay repair for BWR internals.
SI has also provided innovative replacement designs to solve industry problems such as steam generator feedwater nozzle cracking in PWRs. SI designed a replacement transition piece in this case to prevent cracking in the nozzle-to-safe end weld and also to mitigate erosion-corrosion of the leading edge of the thermal sleeve.
