Summary of Worldwide FatiguePro Implementation

FatiguePro, developed by Structural Integrity Associates, Inc. (SI) and licensed by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), is a software system which performs on-line fatigue monitoring of critical nuclear power plant components. Using existing plant instrumentation, FatiguePro automatically tracks fatigue usage and plant transients per Technical Specification requirements. Results are employed in various software modules to count plant transients, compute fatigue usage, and compute fatigue crack growth.

EPRI Demonstration Projects

Two FatiguePro pilot projects were originally conducted at San Onofre Unit 2 (PWR) and Quad Cities Unit 2 (BWR). Additional Pilot Plant studies were performed as a part of the FatiguePro Upgrade Project (1994 – 1997), which included a major upgrade of the software from a DOS-based system to a Windows 3.1-based system. More recently (1999 – 2001), FatiguePro went through a second major upgrade that included incorporation of the Windows NT-based platform, as well as SQL-based databases and self-contained graphics/spreadsheet capabilities. During these projects, significant experience was gained in understanding the importance of key transients and the key fatigue-sensitive locations in both BWR and PWR plants. This work is documented in the following EPRI reports:

  • EPRI Research Project No. 2688-3, “On-Line Fatigue Usage Transient Monitoring System for Nuclear Power Plants,” August 1987.
  • EPRI Report No. NP-6170-M, “FatiguePro ä On-Line Fatigue Monitoring System: Demonstration at the Quad Cities BWR,” January 1989.
  • EPRI Report No. TR-107448, "FatiguePro, Version 2: Fatigue Monitoring Software," December 1997.
  • EPRI Report No. 1002861, "User's Manual for FatiguePro Fatigue Monitoring System, Version 3.0," February 2002.

Worldwide Installations

To date, the FatiguePro system has been implemented at more than 50 nuclear plant sites world-wide, making it the industry's choice in automated fatigue monitoring.

A summary of FatiguePro installation worldwide is presented below. Each of the available FatiguePro modules is identified as follows: ACC = Automated Cycle Counting Module, CBF = Cycle-Based Fatigue Module, SBF = Stress-Based Fatigue Module, and FCG = Fatigue Crack Growth Module.
