Pressurizer Heater Sleeve Repairs
SI has designed and analyzed preemptive heater sleeve repairs for a PWR plant, based on an outside diameter weld pad replacing the inside diameter weld as the primary pressure boundary. This preemptive repair obviates the need for future repairs and avoids an unscheduled outage. It was performed during a steam generator replacement outage.

Pressurizer and Heater Sleeve Section Views with OD Pad Repair
This project involved removal of 34 heaters, half nozzle repairs for each of 34 heater sleeves, and reinstallation of the heaters upon completion of the repair. The field effort took approximately one day per heater sleeve, even with the first time application of improved machining and welding technology. (Strategies for even better repair times have been planned.)
As an option for future repairs, SI has also developed a mid-wall repair, which has the advantage of a great reduction in weld volume. SI is also developing equipment and procedures for inspection of the resulting weld.
