Creep / Service Damage Detection
NDE solutions specifically designed for finding damage to equipment operating at high temperature and high pressure, including components made from advanced materials such as Grade 91.
Once critical locations are determined, Structural Integrity’s NDE professionals perform high energy piping inspections with the latest tools, technologies, and techniques. Examinations for service-induced damage employ time of flight diffraction, linear and annular phased array technologies for girth welds, and seam welded pipe.
Weld Acceptance Examinations
For new construction and replacement weld examination services, SI is well-versed in code-compliant ultrasonic examinations performed in lieu of radiography. Code-compliant UT examinations can be performed per the requirements of B31.1 and B31.3, including applications of ASME Case 189.
Additionally, SI has developed techniques and procedures for performing UT in lieu of radiography examination to support waterwall and tubing replacement activities. Since these exams can be conducted concurrent with construction activities (i.e., no radiation source), results are higher welding production rates and more timely delivery of results for any repair needs.
Nuclear Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE)
SI has a long history in the development and application of ultrasonic testing in the Nuclear industry, accomplishing many industry firsts:
- First, to apply Phased Array UT (PAUT) in lieu of radiography on an ASME Class 1 component
- First, to develop and qualify a manual PAUT procedure for weld overlays
- First to create and qualify a manual PAUT procedure for the examination of dissimilar metal (DM) welds
- First, to develop and qualify an automated PAUT procedure capable of examining heavy-wall, full-structural weld overlays installed on main loop RCS piping
- First, develop, qualify, and deploy a manual-encoded PAUT procedure to examine DM welds with our LATITUDE™ non-mechanized encoding technology.
Today SI continues to innovate and offer Section XI, Appendix XIII, and other examinations in the Nuclear industry. Typical NDE services provided in the nuclear sector include Section XI, Appendix VIII Automated and Manually Encoded Examinations.
UT thickness testing may be performed using a relatively coarse grid over a large area, resulting in a sampling of thickness measurements, though far from a map of the internal topography of the pipe.
SI uses a high-resolution ultrasonic dual-matrix phased array probe for thickness mapping. This probe can be used with an encoding device or scanner to generate a detailed map of component thickness over large areas.
